SEO and Search Engine Forums & Conferences :: Are They Really Helpful?

Working in the SEO/SEM industry can be very rewarding. Many times a problem can be solved simply with a little online research, and posts on a few forums.

All to often, however, some people put too much stock in the posts they see, ultimately negatively impacting their SEO efforts.

In this article I look at some of the positives and negatives of online SEM forums and attending SEM and SEO conferences.

As part of my daily routine I visit a few of the search engine forums out there to see what people are talking about and what some have noticed.

Sometimes I come across real gems - stuff I can put away for later, or use with a client I’m currently stuck on.

But more often than not, the information you see is really mis-information in some cases. As such, one must be extremely careful in relying what is said on one forum.

A good example is when the Google Dance used to happen.

Online search giant, Google, often tests the waters for new services by rolling out a “beta” (first) version of an idea to gauge public reaction.

By employing this strategy, it’s easy to imagine a building full of creative, “mad scientist” types cooking up the latest and greatest online gizmos.

There you’ll find glimpses of the true “bleeding edge” technology Google thinks will shape the way we use information on the Internet in the very near future.

Log on to http://video.google.com to see the next step in Google’s quest to become the world’s foremost repository of online and offline information.

This first attempt at providing searchable data about video is currently restricted to recent television shows.

Unlike the video search at rival Yahoo! ( http://video.yahoo.com ) which provides a searchable database of actual video clips available for viewing right online, Google’s video search results take the browser to a page with still frame images and text transcripts of the show.

The Internet industry is booming and offers opportunities galore for internet businesses. As this article’s title suggests, traffic attracts more traffic. For this to be effective, your website must be good and it must offer unique content for everyone - here is where the old saying, content is king, comes into play!

Unfortunately, getting traffic to your website does indeed offer major difficulties and it is out of the scope of this article to show you the basics. Let’s get into what you really need to double your current traffic.

A) Content - Of course the primary thing you will ever need is content. Before even releasing your website to the public, have prepared at least 20 unique content-rich articles for your visitors.

B) Originality - More importantly is originality. Who will link to another website offering “a blog about my life?” Probably nobody - unless that person has many friends, but now think - how many people will link to a website offering something new? Think about it.

In 2003 I was accepted by Google into their AdSense program. Without a doubt, it has been a profitable relationship for both parties as they continuously serve up high paying content related ads and we share in the spoils. At the beginning of the month Google will bill you for the ads clicked; this step usually occurs as a debit to your checking account.

I am not going to bore you by loading this article with a bunch of redundant, irrelevant garbage you already know. So let’s just cut to the chase.

I’m tired of reading the same old Link popularity articles. No one is saying anything new. The main question on everyone’s mind is “How can I get and KEEP a good ranking in the major search engines?” Even those websites doing well are fighting to keep their place. Reciprocal links, OBSOLETE

Webmaster long ago realized the importance search engines attached to link popularity for top search index positioning and resorted to reciprocal linking hocus pocus. However this practice does not indicate either site as being an authority and actually gives a slight edge to the lesser ranked site. This strategy has already become obsolete and very soon the search engines will change their algorithms and teach their spiders to take it into account.
