Before you start reading this article I must warn you - everything that was written here is my own experience in link exchange. This article should not be referred to as official advice or proven techniques. I only want to share the experience of the helpful methods I used.

When you started your website you probably knew that two major factors play the biggest role in search engine placement: links and content.

1. The first recommended way to get links is to develop useful, unique and original content. Webmasters who visit your website will see that content is good and will link to your website to provide their visitors with some useful websites(info maybe?). If you searched Internet for some information, then you know how hard it can be to find a useful website.

2. Link exchange with other websites. There are two ways you can exchange links:

a) One page links ? you place a link on one page and the other website places a link to your website

b) Site wide links ? you place a link on all pages of your website

We all know the value of getting links to our site. Links bring you traffic from related sites and boost your search engine rank, which brings you, umm, more traffic. So, basically, links = traffic.

However, gone are the days of simply asking for a link (in exchange for a link from your site) and actually getting one. These days, bland reciprocal link requests such as these almost never yield any benefit because they are simply ignored. Think about this old-school approach from the email recipient’s point of view to understand why your link requests are ignored.

Webmasters of quality sites, the ones you want to get links from, are constantly dealing with link requests. 9 times out of 10 the webmaster simply sees "Link Exchange" and deletes the email. I know I do. I have more important things to do than to entertain requests that are most likely for sites that are not even relevant to mine.

And like most webmasters, I don’t give the link requester the chance to even prove if it is relevant (meaning, I don’t read the email). I’ve seen so many of these emails that they seem to hit the "Deleted Items" folder as fast as the Viagra spam emails.

3 Different Link Strategies

Increasing your online business hinges on your ability to optimize your web page for the search engines. While different search engines look for different things, some of the larger and more popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo, look for keywords and links. Keywords are important because the Internet is made up of words; however links are just as important because they allow the search engines to weigh your web page in terms of popularity, so to speak.

Of course, you might be wondering how you can possibly get links to your web page in order to increase your search engine results. Fortunately, you have several options. You can offer to pay individuals and webmasters for a link to your site and you can also offer a reciprocal link trade.

A reciprocal link trade works because most web pages are interested in increasing their search engine rankings and traffic so most will be willing to host a link to your site if you host a link to theirs. The easiest way to achieve this is to target web sites that apply to your target market, but are not in direct competition with your products and services. Then, put up a link to their site and send the webmaster an e-mail asking for a reciprocal link. The webmaster will then either link to your web page, or not. If not, simply delete the link to that web page and start the process over. It will be successful most of the time, but if not don’t get angry, just keep looking for other sites.
